65Devil's Postpile
Location: Madera, Ca
Devi'ls Postpile was established in 1911 as a national monument.
The wall is named for its looks and how it was formed.
It's a wall of rock that from the fiery hot lava. flow that started it all
The lava cooled and hardened into basaltic rock columns.
Basalt (buh-SAWLT) is a hard, dark volcanic rock.
The 798 acres of dark volcanic rock is sturdier than any wall made from
man-made materials. This is a great place to visit on the way to
Yosemite National Park it's about 30 miles east from there.
The columns look like tall posts packed closely together.
Sometime after the lava cooled, forming the columns
at Devil's Postpile, glaciers moved over the area.
They cleared away the surrounding earth and exposed the columns.
Covered from top to bottom with ice, the wall was polished by the glaciers, which eventually melted.

Darn, just my luck.....
Both of these places are very worthwhile to visit. I live near Yosemite and would make a small correction to your location and mileage estimates.
Devil's Postpile is about 4 1/2 hours travel time from Madera.
The border of the wilderness area of Yosemite may be 30 miles if you can fly, but if you are driving to Yosemite Valley from DP, it is about 120 miles of steep winding road and will take about three hours.
Nice description of the postpile, a truly amazing place to see.
...personally speaking I don't have time to visit places in central California - because I am too busy traveling through all of your hubs - and what an amazing journey that is!!!!!!
